Due to how Medium uses claps, it can actually hurt writers to always give 50 claps to every story you read. They want you to use it as a gauge to tell them how good the story was.

Medium calculates an average number of claps on an individual basis. If you always clap 50, then your average is 50, the max possible.

What many people don't realize is that Medium uses that average that they've calculated to rank a story's visibility in people's feeds. When someone claps above their average on a story, it gets a small visibility boost. When its clapped at the average, there is no boost as the story is viewed as being average by Medium's algorithm.

So an average of 50 = an average story and no boost in Medium's rankings.
