Listen to Obama speak.

It’s like his voice is tapping you on the brain to make sure you’re paying attention. When you think you’ve got the message, he adds a little oomph to keep you on your toes. It’s like he’s a linguistic magician.

Well, in this case, more of a musician!

Silence is Golden

When Obama speaks he pauses so the listener can quickly reflect on what he said.

Like Obama, the best musicians know when not to play. Moments of silence can come in handy.

Playing too many notes without something to break them up gets old, fast. The brain doesn’t have enough time to take in and process what it just heard. A constant barrage of words can confuse and overwhelm the audience, and so too can too many sounds in a musical piece.

Musicians use silence during a performance to create emphasis and reflection for the listeners. It can even be used as a point of buildup for the next part of a song.

A brief moment of silence can be something that sounds great and pushes it over the edge to truly stand…
