I had no idea hermit crabs acted this way!

When it comes time to molt — to move to another shell — communities of hermit crabs will arrange themselves in a single-file line from smallest to largest. When the largest crab moves into its upgraded home, the second largest will occupy the newly vacated shell. This pattern continues down the line until every crab has shifted, a phenomenon known as a vacancy chain.
