Stories about Medium are limited to "Network Only" distribution, which could be what's happening with those stories. This means that only your followers and the pub's followers can see it and its ineligible for wider distribution across the site.

I usually put the friend link in my stories and haven't really noticed much of a difference. I'll have to do a deeper dive into my stats to really figure it out though.
